24. 4. Prof. Rex Martin: The Social Recognition Thesis: Constitutional
Rights and Human Rights.
Rex Martin is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Kansas and
Honorary Professor at Cardiff University. He was, for six years, Professor
of Political Theory and Government in the University of Wales Swansea.
Martin has been active in the International Association for Philosophy of
Law and Social Philosophy (IVR) and was a member of the IVR Executive
Committee from 1991-2003 (and Vice President, 1995-2003). He has held a
number of visiting teaching positions, independent research fellowships, and
fellowships at research centers, most recently a visiting fellowship at the
Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (during April and May of 2008).
Martin's fields of major interest are political and legal philosophy (in
particular rights, and economic justice), history of political thought, and
philosophy of history. He has written articles in all these fields His most
recent books are A System of Rights (Oxford University Press, in paperback
1997), a revised edition of R.G. Collingwood's An Essay on Metaphysics
(Oxford University Press, in paperback 2002), and Rawls's Law of Peoples: A
Realistic Utopia?, with David Reidy, co-editor (Oxford: Blackwell, 2006, one
of Choice Magazines Outstanding Academic Titles for 2006).
