How do teachers and pupils understand the meaning of education and their own involvement in it? What is the subject’s perspective on her own educational processes? How can we understand education as self-formation and “Bildung”?
The purpose of the workshop is a discussion of the issues of teaching and learning from the perspective of phenomenology, hermeneutics and ethnology. Both perspectives take education to be a process of acquisition and mediation of meaning in concrete intersubjective situations rather than a transmission of information or knowledge. Education is a practice that takes place between subjects with certain expectations, moods, habits, dispositions, in certain historically, culturally, socially, intellectual formed situations. Yet, education as “Bildung” also focuses on the subject’s ability to (critically) transcend the pragmatic dimension. In this perspective, subjects are not only participants of practices, but are able to relate to them in a reflective way.
The workshop aims to establish a dialogue between philosophical approaches on the issues at stake and empirical studies that hermeneutically reconstruct concrete situation of teaching and learning (student essays, interviews). Discussing empirical material from an educational as well as a philosophical perspective, we want to contribute to an urgently needed mediation between educational practice and theory.
