The Faculty of Behavioural Sciences offers the following Bachelor programmes: Educational Science (OWK), Communication Studies (CW) and Psychology (PSY), the following Master programmes:
Educational Science and Technology (EST), Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (PSTS), Communication Studies (CS), Psychology (PSY) the Research Master Social Systems Evaluation & Survey Research and two Masters for Teachers.
Most of the faculty's research is carried out within the Institute for Behavioral
Research (IBR), and focuses on the themes Health and Safety, Labor and Organization, Knowledge and Education and Communication and Media. Furthermore research is carried out within the Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine (MIRA), Mesa+ and the Institute for Information and Communication Technology (CTIT).
The department of philosophy within the faculty specializes in philosophy of technology. It also participates, together with the philosophy departments of TU Delft and TU Eindhoven, in the 3TU. Centre of Excellence for Ethics and Technology.
For the department of philosophy we are looking for:
Assistant professor in philosophy of technology full-time (38 hr/wk) with an emphasis on IT and a specialization in ethics or philosophy of mind and cognition
Tasks:
You teach within the two-year master program Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (PSTS) and do service teaching for at least two of the following four programs: psychology, computer science, communication science and electrical engineering, plus possible additional service teaching. Within the PSTS program you are involved in master thesis supervision in the area of philosophy and ethics of IT, philosophy of AI and philosophy of mind and cognition in relation to technology. You also teach and are involved in supervision within the PhD programs in Ethics and Technology and Human-Centered Interaction Technologies. You also participate within the research program Interpretive and Normative Investigations of Technology and Technological Culture of the department of philosophy that was recently rated as excellent by an international committee. This program will be updated in 2011. Within the program you do research directed at ethical and cognitive-philosophical aspects of information and communication technology. You also actively apply for external research funding. Your research will also be embedded in the multidisciplinary Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT) of the University of Twente. The ethical component of your research will be embedded in the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology (www.ethicsandtechnology.eu).
Profile:
You have a PhD with a specialization in either ethics or philosophy of mind and cognition, and are competent in both areas. You have a demonstrable interest in (information) technology and have engaged in research and/or teaching in which information technology plays an important role. You have outstanding achievements in research, including refereed publications and relevant international experience. You also have extensive experience in teaching, preferably in programs in philosophy, behavioural science, computer science or engineering, and you have good didactic skills. You are prepared to move to the region, and you are prepared to eventually learn the Dutch language.
Offer:
You receive a temporary appointment as assistant professor for the duration of two years. A continuation of your contract after this period is a possibility. The University of Twente has a tenure track policy, and very well-qualified candidates will be appointed on a tenure track position. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 4.970,00 gross per month, depending on experience, plus vacation benefits and end-of-year bonus.
