"Radical changes are occurring in what democratic societies teach the young, and these changes have not been well thought through. Thirsty for national profit, nations, and their systems of education, are heedlessly discarding skills that are needed to keep democracies alive. If this trend continues, nations all over the world will soon be producing generations of useful machines, rather than complete citizens who can think for themselves, criticize tradition, and understand the significance of another person's sufferings and achievements. The future of the world's democracies hangs in the balance." -Martha Nussbaum

Global Ethics and Justice Research Symposium is organized by the Department of Management Studies at Aalto University School of Business and the Academy of Finland. In her keynote lecture, Academician Martha Nussbaum will address the core theoretical and practical aspects of the topic. During the day, other experts will discuss the theme in light of disability, the relation between theory and practice, corporate responsibility, and design, among other viewpoints. The seminar will be held in English.

Martha C. Nussbaum (1947-) is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago. She has also been an Academician in the Academy of Finland since the year 2000. Academician Nussbaum is one of the most eminent thinkers in political philosophy. She is especially known for her work on the "capability approach," an approach that focuses on the actual abilities of individuals to attain well-being and which Nussbaum has developed together with Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen. Academician Nussbaum has published many highly acclaimed books, including Sex and Social Justice 1998, Hiding from Humanity: Disgust, Shame and the Law 2004, and Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities? 2010.
